I managed to wait two days after receiving my new macro lens before going out into the wild to really test it out. A nice sunny Saturday seemed like the perfect opportunity to get used to a new camera lens. It took me a while to get used to a prime lens (fixed focal length, as opposed to my other lens which is a zoom) but some of the pictures are spectacular. I actually find it difficult to focus on exactly what I want at extreme close range because the lens is so powerful. For example, the center of the flower above is (almost) in focus, while the petals on the edge are blurry – and the flower is only 3 inches in diameter. This was the effect I wanted for this particular shot, but sometimes I’m too close for comfort, or I can’t manage to keep my body still enough to take a shot in focus. All the more reason for a tripod.
