I took Chels on a secret date that I have been planning for a couple months now. We went up to Albany to see the stand-up comedian Daniel Tosh. She was a good sport and didn’t try to spoil the surprise, and actually didn’t know what we were doing until we were headed to out seats and I handed her the ticket stub.
With the weather planning to be nasty (I didn’t know it could rain that hard for that many consecutive miles), we left a little early, and if we got there early we could just explore. Turns out we got there about 90 minutes early, so I had picked out two brewpubs we could stop in and try. I like to make it a point to visit a local microbrew (or at least try one on tap) in every city I visit, and I rate the city on the quality of the beer. Rather unexpectedly we didn’t find either bar. We even asked the local law enforcement that was directing traffic. In our search for these two non-existent places we walked probably a mile and a half down the strip in downtown Albany. It had all the makings of a quaint little downtown area, but we noticed something rather odd. Probably 90% of the restaurants and bars we walked by were closed, on a Saturday night at 7pm. It was very eerie and we weren’t sure what to make of it.
There were a bunch of very spectacular looking government buildings, like this for example, which we can only guess was the capitol building.
We then made it over to the building where our performance was, The Egg. Otherwise known as the dumbest building that I’ve ever been in.
Anyway, it was a small venue, and we had seats really close to the stage so we were pretty excited. I was worried that since I’ve listened to his CD (True Stories I made up) enough times to be able to repeat the jokes by memory that I would be in for a live rendition of his old material. To our pleasant surprise, he only did one joke we had heard before, and it was told quite differently so we didn’t quite know the punchline. He is a really funny guy, and I may even go out on a limb and say he’s the best stand up comedy I’ve seen live. Pretty sure he’ll have a Comedy Central special sometime in the near future and if he releases a new CD, definitely download it. He said it himself: “my CD is pretty cheap on limewire”.
